European New Approach Directives.

These Directives were introduced with a view to speeding up the implementation of the legislation throughout the EU member countries and to facilitate CE Marking.

British, European and International Standards and OJ.

These sites contain all available standards but only harmonised standards may be used for self certification to the Directives. Some standards can be downloaded free but others require payment. The ITU Standards have been included as they are referenced to from other standards under the R&TTE Directive.

US FCC Standards

FCC Standards are available for free download and links have been included to the available parts of Title 47 of the Code of Federal Regulations. The bound volumes are chargeable and a link for ordering has been provided. The Web and bound versions are not necessarily the latest and a link to find any updates to Titles, Parts or specific sections has been provided.

Telcordia

US Telcordia requirements for Telecommunications centres, GR-63-CORE and GR-1089-CORE are available for purchase and links have been provided for this.

Notified and Competent Bodies.

Under the current EMC and R&TTE Directives, Competent Bodies and Notified Bodies are required. Links are provided to the current list of UK resident Notified and Competent Bodies.

NOTE:

In the table above, reference under the R&TTE Directive is made to Annex numbers. These are the Annexes of the Directive which the organisation is approved to act as a Notified Body for. As the R&TTE Directive encompasses the EMC Directive and the Low Voltage Directive, then compliance to the R&TTE Directive could involve certification of Radio characteristics, Telecommunications characteristics, EMC and Safety characteristics. Very few of the above organisations are Notified Bodies with competence covering all the disciplines. Those which offer a full service, or turn-key service, usually sub-contract to other test facilities for the disciplines where they are not considered competent.

When considering a Notified Body, the areas of expertise should be considered. If a turn-key service is offered, you should check which sub-contractors are used for the other disciplines as there may be overall cost implications. Using a Notified Body that offers a turn-key service and has limited internal resources could end up being more expensive than doing it yourself or using a different Notified Body that is perhaps more expensive but has a broader range of competencies.
